New Testimonial - Spiritual Contact - Making Dreams Come True!

Hi all,

I've received another testimonial, this time for my work on Spiritual Contact - many thanks to Emerson for such a nice review!

2 years ago we were in pre-production on my first feature film "Spiritual Contact". I talked with several composers about this project, expressing the maximum information about the supernatural events that I had as a kid, as I was looking for a person to be able to convey these feelings through the music.
Not very satisfied, I continued my search posting on several sites, until two weeks later when Andy Stuteley wrote me an e-mail, showing his work and interest in my project. Looking at his website (www.stootzmusic.com) I heard a song that made me call him right away, because it was exactly the style I was looking for.
One-and-a-half years later, the visual part of the film was done, so Andy and I watched the film together – it took us a whole day to review the movie and make notes and comments about it. How I felt after the spiritual attacks, the sounds I heard when my spirit was out of my body ... After 3 months correcting the dialogue, removing the background sounds, correcting and improving the level of audio and creating sound effects and writing and producing the music for the film, Andy sent me the final mix. After I put the audio and video together, I watched, and to be honest I cried with happiness to see how the music fit exactly with the film. Andy has done great work for Spiritual Contact and I strongly recommend him!!
Thanks for everything mate, you helped me to make my dream come true.
Big Hug.

New Testimonial - Arc of Violence

Having completed the short film "Arc of Violence" a little while ago, I recently received this feedback from Dwayne Timmons, the film's director and producer. I've worked with Dwayne before on "Pookas Breakdown" which was another great short horror film. "Arc of Violence" is another well executed script, with great direction and has some great actors to complete the picture.

I'm looking forward to working with Dwayne and his crew again in the future, but for now, here is the testimonial he kindly sent to me... "Film-making is a roller-coaster ride of ecstasy and despair. It’s the devil's work, with teamwork as its key source of life. Professionalism is a standard requirement within the crazy world of film art, the rest is raw talent and madness. Andy has shown his true skills as a genuine, great modern artist at work with all the passion, desire and commitment that would be reserved for an artist at their highest level. Thirty per cent of a film’s success is music, getting that ingredient right is based on getting a good composer. Andy has shown to me, that he is able and confident to achieve this.  I've worked and studied under seasoned professionals from the BBC, ITV and Channel 4 - with Andy’s creativity, ambition and drive, it won’t be long before his talents will get him noticed within the movers and shakers of the film industry at home and internationally."

I liked this pic so I thought I'd download a copy (from Emerson's Facebook page) to preserve it for the future...

It was taken in The Phoenix cinema where the film had it's premier showing on 27th January 2013.

Happy times!

New Commission - "Jess and James" - Emanation Films

Just got confirmation of the great news that I will be working with the Emanation Films crew again!

Their latest production (estimated a 15 minute short) is currently in pre-prod (think they are casting right now).

Production will be mid-late March 2013 if all goes to plan (and the weather gets better I guess!) so that will fit nicely with the other two productions I'm currently working on: Arc of Violence (short) and The Lost (feature film).

Arc of Violence is almost completed, maybe another week of effort required there, and The Lost will take a little longer but the sound palette is pretty much sorted.

Sometime in the coming weeks I'll also be publishing the official soundtrack to Spiritual Contact - which will be available via Bandcamp (as is The Point of Regret soundtrack).

Busy, busy, busy!

Spiritual Contact - Score and Soundtrack Completed & Premier

Just a quick update ... Spiritual Contact has been finished and the premier is tomorrow (January 27th 2013) at the Phoenix Cinema in East Finchley.

Emerson Pinheiro's dream has finally come to fruition!

The film stars child actor Adam Wilson, who's talents have taken him to the small screen on the TV series "Mr Selfridge" as the main man's son! Well done Adam!

Work in Progress: "Spiritual Contact" and "Arc of Violence"

Just a quick update... it's been quiet for a few months and then two picture locks drop into my lap in the same week... it's going to be busy!

Spiritual Contact

Emerson Pinheiro has completed the final cut and picture lock for the feature Spiritual Contact! I have a copy of the film and have already started work on it.

We're planning for a January 27th premiere in London, but more details on that soon!

There's been some press coverage though I'm not sure what their opinion is (LOL) http://www.urduwire.com/news/newsdetailimage.aspx?id=764518

Arc Of Violence

After some staffing issues delaying the editing of the film, Dwayne managed to find a new editor and pull this short film together... and it was worth the wait!

It's only 11 minutes long, but it's gritty and moody, packing a lot into that time. I now have the picture lock version I can get cracking on this too.

This film has some great direction and high quality camera shooting. It has minimal dialogue but enough to carry the story by the excellent actors, who really are bringing this alive.

Can't wait to get my teeth into this lot!

Credits Updated

Just noticed that my credits page hasn't been updated for about a year! So have slotted in the various things I've been working on and currently in progress... 2012 is going to be busy!

2010/11 were quieter times as I was working on my Orchestration Course and various things (like the Original Motion Picture Soundtrack album!) for the feature film The Point of Regret.

Just sent a draft of the soundtrack for "Mr No" to the producers... I think it's turned out pretty well actually, with a lot of live piano playing and a good mix of classical and contemporary cues. Even had the wife and daughter singing one of the cues over and over, and over again LOL

Have to wait and see what the producers say, but I think we're close to done on Mr No. They have another film "Arc of Violence" that is in editing , so I'll be on that one in the next few weeks.

In the meantime, Elizabeth tells me her shoot for "In Living Memory" went well, so I'm expecting a locked edit within the week, with a target date of the end of May to complete. Can't wait for this as it sounded stunning in the script!

It's so nice to be so busy - I'm working all hours to meet everyone's deadlines and provide the best soundtracks I possibly can, but I wouldn't have it any other way :-)

In Loving Memory - New Film Project

Got a really nice email yesterday from Elizabeth (no further details), asking if I would like to provide the soundtrack for a short film she is producing. Reading the script, it's a bit eerie with great imagery, and I love the direction Elizabeth wants the music to take.

Apparently, I was referred by Daniel Owen, who I don't actually know, but my thanks go to him for the referral!

Elizabeth reckons filming will happen this week, with a deadline of the end of the month, so I'm looking forward to getting stuck into that, with a quick turnaround!

I'll keep you posted how it goes.

... until then full steam ahead to finish "Mr No" first! (it's 75% done now so another evening and should be complete)

Been a whille...

Hey all,

Sorry it's been a while since I posted, there have been a number of musical and non-musical obstacles (including an operation on my arm) that had to be dealt with over the past 6 months. All done now so more time for projects! :-)

I've got a number of things on the go as follows:

  • Spiritual Contact - feature length - about the ghostly sightings of a young boy (music and audio SFX)
    • I've just finished the soundtrack for the trailer for this, which is going to be premièred at the writer/producers birthday party this Sunday 15th April!
  • DIY- short and quirky comedy about DIY exploits (audio SFX)
  • Mr No - short comedy - this has undergone some changes so I'm re-working the score and sound
  • The Lost - feature length - this has been a labour of love for Johann Neethling but he's kept going with it and now the picture lock is almost done. I hope to be seeing the final cut in the next few weeks.

Also coming is a short horror called Arc of Violence which is about to finish shooting.

On top of that I am still studying my Cinematic Orchestration course which just keeps on getting better and better!

Upcoming article on 60secondscloser.com

I just submitted the first of a few articles I'm writing about film music composing - or at least my view of it and what I learned from my time spent on the feature film The Point of Regret.

It will feature on a new site by Simon Tate and Dave Francis, called 60secondscloser where they are sharing their experiences during the making of The Point of Regret. Their mission statement is this:
On this site you’ll find information on everything we’ve learned about making all types of films, from features to promos through documentaries and corporates. We don’t know it all and each day we’re always learning more, but hopefully by reading about the mistakes we’ve made, and sharing in some of our successes, it’ll take you that 60 seconds closer to producing your own film.
So, you should see my article go up sometime later this week, but for now here's a teaser to whet your appetite...

In a perfectly clear night sky, with a dazzlingly bright shining moon, your music needs to be like the millions of shimmering stars, providing the wide-angle backdrop… that’s the bit that people often get emotional about.
That’s your goal.

Ok, it's short but sweet and sounds like it has nothing to do with music, right? Well wait for the full article over on www.60secondscloser.com and let me know what you think.

Bye for now.

Review of TPOR by "Pick 'n' Mix Flix"

Pick ‘n’ Mix Flix is a highly rated movie review blogging website concentrating on lower budget, harder to find movies, as well as Oscar contenders and other award-worthy movies.

'The Point of Regret' got a deserved 8/10 with some specific comments on the sound - which I am totally grateful for, as I did the lot! It was hard work but a fantastic experience creating the audio environment including the music, foley and ADR that was all done in my studio.

"Tate couldn’t have done this on his own. Cinematographer David Francis helped out enormously with his atmospheric, hand-held camerawork and The Point of Regret is also aided by an original score by Andy Stuteley. Talking of sound, this movie reaches deep into its bag of tricks to provide some superb over-dubbing, the likes of which you would generally see in much larger movies. The sound, much like everything else here, punches well above its weight.
Simon Tate, David Francis, AJ Nicol, Christopher Hatherall and others, take a bow. On what’s pretty obviously a limited budget* you’ve combined to make as good a film as it could possibly be as it brings us tales of sacrifice and love, an examination of suicide and regret, and even a debate about the morality of both the media and the death penalty. The Point of Regret really ought to be an inspiration to penniless filmmakers everywhere." Colin Harris - Pick 'n' Mix Flix
